We are having a heat wave and thoughts turn to a visit to the coast. One of my favourite coastal places is Aldeburgh in Suffolk. This fishing village has a huge shingle beach,  sparkling cool sea water with a huge sky beyond.There are several fishing boats but this big blue boat is a favourite. It can be seen coming into land in the early morning.

As it rests on the shore the fishermen gut their catch providing delicious fresh seafood to eat on the spot in the small cafes nearby or to take home  .

Summer Vacation Plans

In The Garden

I have not added any new posts for a while as I have been recovering from total  knee replacement surgery and sitting for extended periods at my computer is painful.

SPRING FLOWERS

The weather is still wintery but it is encouraging to see spring flowers  for sale in the shops .I could not resist these daffodils and anemones.I have some old stoneware pots which are the perfect container for them.

   Snowdrops and Aconites are appearing in some sheltered spots around the colleges and riverbanks.These are the first signs of spring and will gradually spread into large groups until they are replaced by crocuses and wind flowers.

As Dreams Unfold

Inspite of freezing cold weather two attractive models posed for our life drawing class this week.

The Salvation Army Band

 

 

The Salvation Army work hard to raise funds to enable them to carry out good  social work that many of us do not want to do. This group were playing brilliantly outside Fortnum and Mason in Piccadilly ,London just before Christmas. I could not resist doing a painting of them.

We woke up to heavy snow falling this morning .As soon as it eased of a little there were dozens of happy children off to play in the snow and taking sledges to Castle Hill .Happily it is Sunday morning and there is no school.

WEATHER WARNING

We are being warned to take note of the weather forecast as a wind storm tonight followed by very cold weather and snow will take place over the weekend and into Monday morning.Getting up early to get to work on a snowy morning can be grim in a blizzard.

DECEMBER WEATHER

The weather  in England is very cold with sub zero tempertures ,today there has been a little snow.
There are ice skating rinks in various cities with several in London where you can have a go at skating even if you have never tried before .Sometimes rivers and lakes freeze over and if you have local knowledge you can skate there too.

  Gardeners and allottment holders struggle to get vegetables out of the frozen   ground, producing home grown brussels sprouts and potatoes for Christmas Dinner is a matter of pride.

London is full of wonderful places to visit as well as the gift laden shops. London in the snow is lovely and full of romance following the engagement of American actress Meegan Markle to Prince Harry.

LONDON IN WINTER

London is a wonderful city to visit at this time of the year. The Christmas lights are switched on creating a magical atmosphere once it gets dark.The shops are full of luxury Christmas goods and gifts, even if you think they are too expensive to buy it is fun just to look.

Cold weather is forecast , London in the snow is  lovely,so much colour and contrast.I have tried to capture this in this painting of Piccadilly.

Christmas Market

Christmas Market

The shops are full of Christmas goods, delicious mincepies  and seasonal fare is now available.Not everyone approves of goods on display this early but the lights look warm and cheerful now that the clocks have changed and darker evenings are here.

Cities all over Europe have special Christmas Markets with specialist craft goods and food  on offer.I love these markets.My favourite stalls in Cambridge market are Tom's Cakes and another selling delicious crystallized fruits and, nuts and spices.

Will There Be Snow ?

We have not had any real snow in Cambridge for four years so I have to use photographs from previous years for paintings.I noticed on a news item that there has been snow in Finland, a long way to go for some snow.

After a short break from painting and selling work I always return to a Life Drawing group in Cambridge .The group starts with drawing with black charcoal on paper .It is good discipline to draw using only shades of grey.

Down To The Sea

The heat wave has been exhausting ,the May Balls and summer term are nearly over. The students  and their mentors are planning their escapes from Cambridge to  enjoy a vacation.Some time by the ocean cooling off with Majorca and the other Balearic islands popular destinations  for this year.

Punting On The River,Cambridge UK

Warm, sunny weather has encouraged many people onto the River Cam to try their hand at punting.This is not as easy as it looks and there are many crashes and lost punting poles.
A chauffeured punt is easier and a lovely way to see around the backs of  Cambridge Colleges which are not accessable to the public.
Keep your hands inside the punts, bashed thumbs are a common injury as passengers clutch onto the sides of bumping punts.

There are several starting points for the tours, I usually recommend  Scudamores, their starting point is on Quayside opposite Magdalene College.
There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes nearby if you have to wait .

                                                                                         

 If you have a large party you can book more than one punt. We celebrated our Golden Wedding by having lunch in my husband's college and then hireing 2 punts for our rather drunken friends which was a lot of fun.You can also arrange to have picnics and drinks delivered to your punt if you want to.

Weddings and Weight Watching

Summer is a time when I start worrying about loosing some weight.Various social events beckon and I want to fit into my posh clothes without looking too porky.I have joined weight watchers, online this time as I cannot face those awful lectures and smug women who have lost a ton of weight.
